CHAPTER 12

TALIA

“HOME SWEET HOME.

Mary Coffman was beside me in the parking lot, unloading her vehicle as I slowly unstrapped the children from their seats. I smiled tightly at her, trying to keep conversation to a minimum, not knowing how many prying ears or eyes were around.

“They said the tenth floor may still need airing out,” she continued, and I winced inwardly. Like I need it announced to the world what floor I live on, thank you Mary.

“Thank you,” I said softly, grabbing all of the bags that I could with Emily on my hip.

“Oh, you don’t need to be carrying all of... Paul! Come over here and help!”

Of course Paul would be there, helping his sister move back in. “It really isn’t necessary,” I said to him as he walked up, a warm smile on his face.

“It is if you want my sister to shut the hell up,” he muttered into my ear, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Daddy would have helped,” Elizabeth announced, dramatically pulling her bag alongside of her.

“I’m sure he would have,” I replied without so much as a second thought, not wanting to correct her where it could end up in the tabloids. Besides, I knew it was true.

“You all right?” Paul asked, once we were on the elevator, just the two of us and my children. I sighed and nodded, drawing an understanding wink from him. The children had been through so much already, and I knew... oh, I knew, beyond a shadow of any doubt that today was more heartbreaking and confusing than ever.

The floor was bustling with activity as we finally disembarked from the elevator, the faint scent of smoke still lingering in the air. Elizabeth and Michael seemed to be dragging their feet, reluctant to even go back to our condo.

Kind of like me.

“Hello, Ms. Talli,” my next-door neighbor said as she shuffled out in the hall. “It’s good to see you back here, looking so healthy.”

“Thank you,” I murmured.

“It’s a shame things didn’t work out for you,” she continued, placing her time-weathered hand on my arm. I swallowed over the lump in my throat, only managing to nod as I continued on.

Of course, Elizabeth just had to chime in.

“My mommy’s just fixing herself now,” she said defiantly, her eyes challenging me to correct or scold her in front of others.

“That’s good, dear,” she said with a warm smile and a pat to Elizabeth’s head. “That’s good.”

Oh great. So now the little old lady next door thinks I’m some sort of loon. Or... perhaps not, judging by her knowing smile as she looked over her shoulder at me.

“That’s Evelyn Truesdale,” Paul said softly as I placed my key in the door.

“I know,” I replied, looking at him like he had come from Mars. Hell, I was the one that lived next door to her for fucks sake.

“So, you know all about her running with the Rat Pack back in the day?” he asked, holding the door open as I ushered the younger children inside.
